Cultivated by ancient civilizations
for thousands of years for the plant fiber and for the food
in the seeds, hemp is becoming increasingly recognized as
a very sustainable crop that can provide super nutrition
and many other valuable products including rope, paper,
fiber board, clothes and much more. In fact, Henry Ford
was once experimenting with automobile bodies using hemp
fiber.
Hempseeds typically contain 30-35%
oil by weight and are extremely high in essential fatty
acid (EFA) content. It is nature's most balanced oil for
human nutrition, with an approximate 3:1 ratio of linoleic
acid (LA), an omega-6 to alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), an
omega-3. In fact, this oil can provide all EFA requirements
for life due to its balanced 80% EFA content (including
GLA, gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6) which primarily serve
as building blocks for cells and hormone production, while
its 10% saturated fat content supplies energy.
EFAs are necessary for good health
and are responsible for the luster in our skin, hair and
eyes and even the clarity in our thought processes, as they
transfer oxygen to every cell in the body. They also lubricate
and clear the arteries, strengthen immunity and help prevent
viral and other threats to the immune system. However,
EFAs are not produced in the human body and mustbe obtained
from food sources. Hempseeds are a source of complete
protein and contain all 20 known amino acids, including
the 9 essential amino acids.
By coming in at 30-35% complete
protein, hempseeds actually have twice the protein of most
meat products. In addition to being high in anti-oxidants,
hempseeds contain a number of vitamins including: A, B1,
B2, B3, B6, C, D, E.
